MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic, for connecting AI assistants to outside tools and data sources — your files, a calendar, a business system — in a consistent way. Think of it as a common plug: instead of a custom, one-off connection for every tool, MCP gives them a shared way to talk to AI.
Before a standard like MCP, connecting an AI assistant to your actual business tools — your files, your calendar, your CRM — usually meant a custom, bespoke integration for each one. That's slow to build and awkward to maintain, especially for a small business without a dedicated technical team.
MCP solves this by giving AI assistants and outside tools a shared, standard way to talk to each other. Rather than a different plug shape for every socket, it's one universal plug: any tool that supports MCP can connect to any AI assistant that supports MCP, without custom work on either side.
For a non-technical business owner, the practical upshot is simpler and increasingly common connections: your AI assistant being able to check your calendar, search your documents, or look something up in a business system you already use — set up once, rather than engineered from scratch.

You don't need to understand MCP technically to benefit from it — increasingly, it's just the plumbing behind an "connect your tools" or "connect your files" button in the AI products you already use. Worth knowing the name if you see it mentioned in a tool's settings.
