Claude for Chrome (also called Claude in Chrome) is a browser extension that lets Claude see the web page you're on and act on it directly — navigating, clicking, filling in forms and pulling out information — instead of you copying and pasting between the browser and a chat window. You grant it permission site by site, and it asks for confirmation before anything sensitive.
A lot of everyday work happens in the browser — checking a dashboard, filling in a form, pulling figures from a portal — and normally, using AI on that work means copying information out of the browser and into a chat window, then copying the result back. Claude in Chrome removes that step by letting Claude work inside the page itself.
What it actually does
Once installed and given permission on a site, Claude in Chrome can:
- Navigate through a website, following the same clicks a person would.
- Fill in forms using information you provide or that it's gathered.
- Extract data — pulling figures or information straight off a page rather than you copying it out by hand.
- Work through multi-step processes on a site, end to end.
It's designed to work alongside other Claude tools too — research gathered in the browser can feed straight into a document or spreadsheet being built elsewhere, so the whole task stays in one flow instead of switching between five open tabs and a chat window.
An Australian small-business example
Say your marketing coordinator checks three different ad platforms every Monday to pull together a performance summary. Today, that's opening each dashboard, reading the numbers, and typing them into a spreadsheet by hand. With Claude in Chrome given permission on those specific dashboards, it can read the figures directly off each page and compile them — with a person still checking the summary before it goes anywhere.
The safety guardrails
Because this involves an AI tool actually acting on live web pages, Anthropic built in specific controls:
- Site-level permissions. You choose exactly which sites it's allowed to act on — nothing else.
- Action confirmations. It checks with you before anything sensitive.
- High-risk site blocking. It won't act on sites flagged as risky.
It's still a newer capability, so the sensible starting point — the same one we teach for every AI tool — is: start with a small number of trusted, low-stakes sites, watch how it behaves, and only widen what you give it access to once you trust the pattern.
